VOA Special English News 107

Norwegian climate scientists say the Arctic has been loosing 45,000 square kilometers of ice cover yearly over the past 20 years. They say the thinning polar ice has opened new passages for ships across the north. And they say that could make trade between Europe and Asia 40 percent faster than using the Suez Canal. Norwegian foreign minister Jonas Gahr Stoere recently brought American Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to the city of Tromso. She visited in the area which could hold 20 percent of the world's undiscovered oil and gas supplies. The United State Geological Survey say they could be worth 9,000,000,000,000 dollars. She said many countries are looking at the possibilities for exploration of the Arctic for its resources.

My thought/opinion this issue
This is a very interesting news. Some countries might not depend on the Middle East's oil because of the effect of climate change.

say Arctic has been loosing 45,000 square kilo meters
--> say the Arctic has been losing 45,000 square kilometers

9,000,000,000 dollars
--> $9,000,000,000,000
The scale proceeds like this:
1,000,000 is one million
1,000,000,000 is one billon
1,000,000,000,000 is one trillion
However, the scale is different parts of the world. In the U.S., we use the short scale. The multiple systems are a bit confusing, I think.

looking at possibilities for exploration of Arctic
--> looking at the possibilities for exploration of the Arctic

Yes, it will be interesting to see how the situation develops in the coming years.

Thank you for good information, I have first learned "short scale" and "long scale".

I have known "trillion", but I made a mistake in writing it in this case.
