Saudi activists say a court in Jeddah sentenced a Saudi woman to ten blows from a whip for violating a banned on women's driving. No written law in Saudi Arabia bars women from driving, only religious orders or "fatwas". The orders come from a conservative form of Islam called Wahhabism. The sentencing comes two days after Saudi Arabia King's Abdulla announced that women will have the right to vote and compete in local elections. The right is to start in 2015. Amnesty International welcomed the announcement. But group said the King's reform is not meaningful if women still face punishment trying to exercise their right to freedom of movement.

The United States Space Agency says pieces of a non-operational satellite have fallen back to earth over the pacific ocean. NASA says it may never be known exactly when or where the pieces of the satellite fell. But, it is most likely at the bottom of the ocean. NASA has said the threat to public safety from the falling satellite parts was very small. The space agency warned people not to touch any of the pieces. The parts could be spread along the path more than 800 kilometers long. The satellite was launched in 1991 and it had not been working since 2005. It is the largest piece of NASA space wreckage to fall to earth since the Skylab station crushed in western Australia 32 years ago.

Cambodia's United Nation's supported war crimes court says it may take action against VOA's Khmer service. The court says the service revealed private court documents and names of members of Khmer Rouge with suspected rinks to genocide in the 1970. VOA officials said there is no reason for the investigation. VOA said such action could hurt reporting about an important international news story. Official also said VOA and its Khmer service will report on the court fully and fairly. Last month, VOA's Khmer service named three Khmer Rouge suspects who had been identified by court lawyers in private court papers. The three had already been identified by an American newspaper and a New Zealand Web site in June. VOA video reports in August showed pictures of the court documents.
