VOA Special English News 90

The American Military is planning to let female troops work in jobs that are closer to areas where troops are involved in combat. The Defense department officials say the changes would open about 14,000 jobs to women. Female service members would be permitted to serve as medical workers and intelligence officers. These are jobs that have been considered too dangerous for women. The changes mainly affect women in the Army and the Marine Corps. Women would still be barred from serving in infantry, armour and special operations. Congress may decide to delay the move or block it before it takes effect. At least 144 female service members have been killed in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and more than 850 have been wounded.
