A new report says that more than 400 women in Afghanistan are in jail for attempting to escape abusive husbands and forced marriages. Their report says women are often accused of being disloyal to their husbands and put in prison for moral crimes. Human Rights Watch reported the findings. The head of group Kenneth Roth says Afghan Judicial officials have used Sharia for Islamic law to justify the arrests. But he says Afghanistan is the only country that uses Sharia law to make a running away a crime. Human Ｒights Watch spoke with 58 women and girls for the report. One woman says she was forced to marry a violent man who abused drug and alcohol. They were married when she was only 12 years old. She and her two daughters are now in prison for running away and going into hiding.
