The European Union has banned new purchases of oil from Iran after July first. EU foreign ministers also voted Monday to block Iran's central bank from money and property it holds in foreign banks. The EU wants to pressure Iran to suspend parts of its nuclear program.The July first limit will permit major buyers of Iranian oil to find new sources. Such buyers include Greece, Spain and Italy. The EU also voted to stop all trade in gold and other valuable metals with Iranian government agencies. Iran's government immediately denounced the decision. Lawmakers there repeated threats to close the strait of Hormuz, an important path for shipping oil.
