"Rakkyou" 2014

Last Monday, I made a pickles called "Rakkyo".My parent had given me it every year until my father died. So for several recent years, I have not eaten the homemade "Rakkyo". I am looking forward to eating it about two weeks later.

P.S. I found an article about "Rakkyo" that I wrote on my blog about five years ago. I had completely forgotten about it.

Recovery from injury and digital camera

I am recovering from the third finger's injury of my right hand. Now, I can see one third of nail in my finger.

I have received a insurance payment that came from a bike accident on my way to office in the middle of April. So, last Friday, I bought a digital camera. Olympus Pen Lite E-PL6, by using the money. It was a little expensive, but I wanted to change the mood from the injury.

"The Summer in Nomonhan"[story about "Battle of Khalkhin Gol" in Japanese]

 I have finished a book named "Nomonhan no Natsu"(ノモンハンの夏) several days ago. It was about one month for me to read it. It tells about a conflict called "Battles of Khalkhin Gol" between Japan and the Soviet Union on territorial issue just before the beginning of  WW2. It did not take much attentions from the world than other historical events, but as many as 18,000 Japanese soldiers died or injured in the conflict.

There are many and confused reasons why Japan had started the hopeless war against the USA. One of the reasons is that the Imperial Japanese Army had greater power and no civilian could not stop it.

One of the goal of the author is to describe that many soldiers died in vain when top officials did not have a good plan or strategy idea.

Now, military in China has a greater power and it does not look controlled by civilian. Military has a tendency to like conflicts to claim its "raison d'etre", I think. And I think that China's situation looks a little bit similar to Japan's situation before WW2.

The Face of the American Farmers Is Changing

　平均的なアメリカの農業従事がどういうひとか、考えたことがありますか？新しい報告書によると、平均的な人は、58歳の白人男性である。その情報は、合衆国の人口や経済の情報を集めている機関である、アメリカ合衆国国勢調査局によるもので ある。

　そのリポートによると、65歳以上の農業従事者は、最も数が増えているグループとなっている。これらの農業従事者が退職したら、アメリカの農業は大きな変化を経験することになる。報告書は、それらの変化がどのようなものになるか、示 唆している。

　エイドリン・ギブソンはテネシー州のノックスビルの北部で、狭い耕作地で農業を営んでいる。ある意味、彼女はアメリカ農業のニューフェースである。まず第一に、女性で、そして第二に、彼女は少数民族である。彼女は、ほとんど 白人男性に占められている産業で成功している。

　しかし、国勢調査局の報告書はそこが変化していると、示唆している。アメリカで農業に従事している少数民族は増えている。また、報告書は合衆国の耕作面積は狭くなっていることを示している。

　ネー ト・フィリップスは中部テネシー州大学で農業を教えている。彼によると、耕作地の減少は、アメリカ人の食べ物に対する考え方の変化を一部反映したものとなっている。この傾向は、しばしば、「ファーム・トゥ・テーブル」と呼ばれているもの である。それは、アメリカ人は、その地域で作られた食物を購入し始め、さらに、食べ物の産地がどこか正確に知りたがっている。

　ネート・フィリップスは、この傾向のため、農業を始める若い人が増えていると言っている。また、アメリカの農業 従事者を喜ばせる確かな傾向がある。国勢調査局の調査は、農業従事者が作る食物の価格がほんの６年間で、２５パーセント上昇していることを発見した。

"Jinkan-Banji-Saiou-ga-Uma"

On the morning of April 18, I suffered an injury on my right hand's third finger when I rode a bike on my way to office. The cause was the loss of balance by slipping foot on the pedal and hitting my right handle on a guardrail. It included a deep cut and a fracture on the edge of the finger.

I must stay a hospital from April 18 to 21 because the doctor did an operation that fixed the broken part by burying a thin metal. Staying at a hospital and an operation on my body both were the first experience to me.

Of course, these are no good things, but when these happen I always remind a famous, and my favorite saying "Jinkan- Banji-Saiou-ga-Uma"（人間万事塞翁が馬） that comes from an ancient China' story. It means that "a worse thing might happen after a bad thing and also an opposite thing might happen, no one predicts the future correctly".

A New Study Finds Anti-Smoking Rules Prevent 13 Million Deaths in China

新たな研究によると中国において、たばこ規制が強化されれば、この先40年間で1300万人以上の命が助かるということである。研究結果はブリティッシュ・メディカル・ジャーナルで発表された。

　中国は、2003年に世界保健機構のたばこ規制に関する世界的な条約にサインした。しかし、中国は喫煙を規制するＷＨＯの提案を取り入れていない。専門家は、たばこ規制が強化されなければ、2050年までにたばこ関連の要因で、5千万もの人々が死亡すると言っている。研究者たちは、にコンピュータプログラムを使って推計した。

　デビッド・レビーはワシントンにあるジョージタウン大学のランバルディ・がんセンターで働いている。彼によると、世界中の喫煙者の約3分の1が中国人で、中国人男性の半分以上が喫煙者である。また、煙草が健康を害すること知らないまま喫煙を始める人がしばしばいると、デビッド・レビーは言っている。

　ＷＨＯの計画は、すべての公衆の場での喫煙の禁止を求めていて、また、たばこの包装に健康についての警告と禁煙を支援するプログラムを求めている。さらに、たばこ製品により多くの税金を課すべきだとしている。

　ＷＨＯとの協定に調印後、中国はたばこに12パーセントの課税を命令した。しかし、中国政府は、購入者に税金を払わせることはしなかった。テーウィ・フはたばこ規制の専門家で、カリフォルニア・バークレー大学の名誉教授である。彼は、研究のリポートを書くことを支援した。

　彼によると中国の前大統領である胡錦濤（こきんとう）は公衆での喫煙禁止を支援したとのことである。フ教授は、中国における喫煙を減らす最も効果的方法はたばこ税の大幅な増額であると言っている。しかし、そのような動きはすぐには起きないだろうと予測している。

Family trip 2014 ("Yunoko onsen")

My family, including my son who lives alone to go a university, have an overnight trip once or two times every year. This time, we visited "Yunoko onsen"（湯の児温泉） that locates in the southern part of Kumamoto prefecture in March 29 to 30.

We left my house at 9 am and picked up my son in Fukuoka city and went forward to the onsen.

Now, the days we spend together are getting less than the past so, to spend hours and to see same things together is very good to keep our relationship, I think.

We arrived at the onsen after 4 pm. Unfortunately, it was continuing to rain and I thought that the scenery could look more beautiful if it was clear.

"Yunoko onsen" is in a city of Minamata that is known for "Minamata-byou"（水俣病）.  I wanted to visit a memorial center that tells about the pollution disease but I gave it up because I could not get my family's agreement.

In the morning of March 30, we walked around there for about 20 minutes. I had an impression that this area is one of  "hinabita onsen"（鄙びた温泉）. "Hinabita" means that "it is rural but has good atmosphere".

We went home after we had a short stop at a farmer's market and bought several souvenirs that included "Dekopon"（でこぽん） that is a well-known citrus fruit in this area.

 I like the following phrase of "Always with me"（「いつも何度でも」） known for the ending song of "Spirited Away"（「千と千尋の神隠し」）.

I have been interested in how it is translated into English and I found two versions on the Internet.

"The sky is a clear blue, no matter what we do. (The road is long, but I see the light.)"

"Every time we fall down to the ground, we look up to the blue sky above we wake to its blueness, as for, the first time."

This time, I have tried to translate it into English. It is the following.

"Every time people face a same failure that they had experienced in the past, they just notice that a clear sky has naturally had its pure blueness."

If you have a good advice on my translation, please let me know about it.

ほとんどの人は「歩く」という動作について意識することはない。しかし、世界中には数百万の人が歩くことができず、一歩すら出来ない。今「着られるロボット」がそのことを変えるかもしれない。

ボブ・アメリオは、「フリーホイーラー」というバスケットボールチームを率いている。彼のチームメンバーは歩くことができない。彼らは動き回るのに車いすを使っている。「フリーホーイラー」はペンシルベニア東部で試合をしている。

しかし最近、ボブ・アメリオは、26年間することがなかったことをした、”歩いた”のだ。

彼が歩こうとする前、理学療法士は彼の体型を測り、ハイテクノロジーの装置、即ち、車いすから彼を引上げ、彼の足を動かす装置を準備した。装置は、エクソ・バイオニック・エクソスケルトンと呼ばれる「着られるロボット」である。100キロ以下の体重の人は、エクソスケルトンを着ることができる。

理学療法士がボタンに触れると、エクソは、ボブを前に、上に押した。それから、バッテリー駆動のモーターは彼の筋肉のように働き、彼の足を動かした。

ラス・アンゴウルドはエクソ・バイオニックという会社の共同開発者である。彼は、この装置では、使用する者は、その人の骨に体重を乗せていることになると言っている。彼が言うには、エクソは動く能力を提供するだけであるとのことである。

"wakame"

It is fine day, today, I rode my bike to a seashore at the most northern area of Kyushu for the first time after several month. I have heard a little bit interesting story there.

"Wakame"（ワカメ） is a sea weed known as a representative Japanese food. In early Spring, people take it at some seashore.

At the seashore, I asked a fisherman's wife about this year's "wakame" condition. She said that it is not good and the cause might be by the global warming effect.
