My thought/opinion on this issue
I have first learned the name of Mr.Inoue after reading this article in Asahi. I am a little bit sorry that the VOA's news does not tell about his work to improve the relationship between two countries.

"two-year term" and "ninth six-year term" --> Very nice! I think that you did a great job with this article. By the way, "congress" and "senate" are usually capitalized, and I believe that "capital" should probably be "capitol" since the sentence is referring to the building itself.
I don't pay attention to politics too much, but I'm still surprised that I was unfamiliar with even his name since he's been around so long and was so influential. I agree that it would be interesting to hear about his Japan-related work.
Jon-san,
Thank you for good advice.
I feel interesting that the two words have same pronunciation.
I have corrected my translation in Japanese.
